Cold, rain set to persist across Kenya for next five days - Kenya Met

Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are also predicted in the Highlands and South eastern lowlands. Residents in these areas should expect a mix of sunny intervals and occasional showers.
Cold, rainy weather experienced across the country over the past week might not ease soon, as the Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted intermittent showers, thunderstorms and strong winds across several regions in the next five days.
In its five-day weather forecast valid from August 22 to 26, 2025, the department warned that rainfall is expected in parts of the highlands, east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and north-western Kenya.

These areas include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and Narok.
“Morning rains are likely to occur over a few places, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms expected over several areas during the first half of the forecast period, reducing later,” the weatherman said.
“The maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 27°C, while minimums will range between 9°C and 12°C.”
Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are also predicted in the highlands and southeastern lowlands. Residents in these areas should expect a mix of sunny intervals and occasional showers. The department noted that night temperatures may drop below 10°C in some highland areas and near Mt. Kilimanjaro.
In the highlands, east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi Counties, mornings will be cloudy with occasional rains, giving way to sunny intervals.
“Afternoon showers are likely over several places initially, but will reduce later. Nights will be partly cloudy with showers in some areas,” KMD noted.
“Maximum temperatures will range from 24°C to 25°C, while minimums will be between 7°C and 11°.”
The weatherman also noted that strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) will be expected along the Coast, South eastern lowlands and North eastern and North western regions.
“We advise coastal and lowland communities to take precautionary measures as the shower winds may disrupt daily activities,” the department added.
For northeastern counties, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, the forecast indicates sunny intervals during the day, with isolated showers mostly in Marsabit County.
The south-eastern lowlands, covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, will experience occasional morning cloudiness giving way to sunny intervals, but a few showers may occur during the early part of the week.
Coastal areas, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, are expected to have sunny intervals punctuated by occasional showers, especially in the mornings and afternoons. Nighttime conditions will largely remain partly cloudy.
The Meteorological Department emphasised that this forecast should be used alongside daily updates for precise planning and urged the public to remain vigilant.
“While rainfall may provide relief in some regions, residents should be prepared for strong winds and cooler nights, particularly in the highlands and lowland areas,” the department said.
Overall, Kenyans have been urged to monitor weather updates closely, especially in flood-prone and wind-exposed areas, as the forecast indicates variable rainfall intensities and intermittent cold conditions across the country.
